Tanzania is one of the most complex, romantic, friendliest and pictoresque countries in Africa. A magnificent safari country with a vast history and a number of national parks, such as Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater where the first traces of humans were found by the Leakey Family, and of course the famous Serengeti Park, mostly known for the migration of gnu's and zebras. And of course the highest mountain in Africa, the Kilimanjaro, also known as the roof of Africa. After an adventurous safari and a tough trek to the top of Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru nothing is better than to relax on the snow white beaches at the coast or on Zanzibar. Zanzibar is an island out from Dar es Salaam and is mainly known for its herbs and as the birth place of the famous singer Freddy Mercury.

 The People

Tanzania has a population of about 39 miljon, most of whom are descendants of the Bantou tribe. Like Kenya there are also many Maasai people in Tanzania, nomads who still live their life like they did centuries ago. The Maasai can be found throughout the country, but mainly in the vicinity of the Ngorongoro Crater. The remainder of the population consists of mainly people with Arabic, Asian and European descent. Because of this cultural mix there is also a wide variety of religions present in Tanzania. Most Tanzanians are protestant, but also catholism and islam are widespread. Most muslims live along the coast and on the islands.

 Money

The national currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian schilling. There are banknotes of 200, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000 and coins of 50, 100 and 200 shilling. It is prohibited to take Tanzanian schillings in or out of the country. We advice you to bring Travellers cheques denominated in Euros or American dollars, or cash in either of those currencies. At the Barclays Bank in Arusha and Dar es Salaam ATM services are available for holders of international bank cards. Creditcards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants.

 The Climate

Tanzania has a tropical climate all year round. There are two wet seasons. The main wet season runs from March till June and during this time have rains often occur together with heavy thunder. During November and December there is another short wet season with the occasional shower. The temperature is lowest from June to September, with an average of around 25 degrees Celcius.
